Garantor says it’s worrisome how easy it is to violate privacy

[16/07/2007] Upon presenting his anual update, Pizzetti said “it’s worrisome, the ease with which one can illegally penetrate the big data banks without coming accross adequate barriers” and criticized how “there has grown in an immesurable way the resources of cameras, movil phones and other technologies for the violation of privacy.

Pizzetti added that the situation has to convert into a “national emergency,” like it is with the enviornment or infrastructures, so that it counts negatively against the image of the country.”

The country has been shaken recently by the discovery of webs that are in place to illegally pick up information about politicians, journalists, famous people or sports players, though listening in on phone calls or accessing data banks.

The lastest scandel was discovered when a case of illegal spying on journalists and judges was uncovered, thought to be in charge of miliatry secrets.

The president of the entity announced that it will try for “a collaborative activity” but also one of “watchfulness” of national secrets.

Pizzetti asked that the Parlament assumes “clear posicions” in reference to the publication of the transciptions of telephone calls through the means of communication.

He also asked the press, that until the law that regulates these types of publications is approved, to act “with moderation at with deep respect for the code” in respect to the treatment of personal data.

The garantor announced that next year controls over the data banks of financial institutions and business that distribute electric energy, gas and water will be instilled.
